Becoming A Member

The department is constantly seeking dedicated individuals interested in and capable of volunteering a significant portion of their time as fire fighters. Blacksburg, Virginia Tech and parts of Montgomery County depend on volunteers for their everyday fire protection. Men and women from many walks of life are volunteer fire fighters, but it does take a high level of dedication to respond at all hours of the night and day to any situation which may occur.

Applicants must:

  • have a valid driver's license.

  • pass a background check.

  • be in good physical condition.

  • be available a significant portion of the day or night, and preferably both, to respond to incidents.

  • be available for periodic nightly duty crew shifts.

  • be available for monthly meetings, training and other department activities.

Applicants who are accepted by the department must successfully complete a one year guided probation period. Members on probation are progressively given more responsibilities and fire-ground tasks as their training progresses. The department membership will accept or decline probationary members after the one year period is complete. Prior experience is not necessary.
